Clarifying Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) Renewal Rules: What’s Really Changing in 2025?

Recent discussions about Spain’s immigration reforms have caused confusion, particularly regarding the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) renewal period. Contrary to some reports, the NLV renewal will not automatically extend to four years starting May 2025. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming changes under Royal Decree 1155/2024.

Key Updates Under RD 1155/2024

Spain’s new immigration reforms aim to modernize procedures for family, training, and work-related permits. However, for non-lucrative residency, the renewal rules remain largely unchanged:

  • Initial residence: 1 year
  • First renewal: 2 years
  • Second renewal: 2 years
  • After 5 years: Eligibility for long-term residence (5-year validity)

The updated Article 64 explicitly states:
“The renewed temporary residence authorization shall have a duration of two years, unless it is time to obtain long-term residence.”

NLV Renewal Requirements (Post-May 2025)

To successfully renew your NLV, you must demonstrate:
✔ Valid NLV status (or apply within the 90-day grace period post-expiry)
✔ Physical presence in Spain for >183 days/year
✔ Financial means (400% IPREM for applicants + 100% per dependent)
✔ Private health insurance coverage
✔ School enrollment for dependent children (if applicable)
✔ Paid renewal fees
✔ No public safety/health risks

Note: Submitting a social integration report (issued by your Autonomous Community) may help if certain criteria aren’t fully met.

The “4-year renewal” misconception likely stems from reforms to other permits (e.g., family/work visas). The NLV’s rules (Articles 61–64) remain distinct and unchanged.
