We wanted to update you on the recent news that the US government has temporarily paused scheduling of new student visa interviews.  We understand that this is only affecting new USA student visas, so if students have an interview already booked, they should still be able to attend.

We hope that interviews resume as normal shortly. Therefore, if any students are currently applying or planning to apply to a US university, we encourage you to proceed as normal. We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep you informed as new guidance is released.

LONDON, 12 May 2025 – The Home Office today published Restoring Control over the Immigration System, an 82-page white paper outlining radical reforms to curb record migration levels while attracting high-value talent. The measures mark a decisive shift from reliance on overseas labor to domestic workforce development and targeted global recruitment.

Key Policy Changes

1. Skilled Worker Visa Overhaul

  • Salary thresholds raised, with all “skilled” roles now requiring RQF Level 6 (graduate-level) qualifications

  • Abolition of the Immigration Salary List discount system

  • Sector-specific visas limited to roles with proven long-term shortages, contingent on employer investments in UK worker training

2. Student Visa Tightening

  • Post-study work visas reduced from 2 years to 18 months

  • Stricter oversight of educational sponsors, including recruitment caps for non-compliant institutions

3. Social Care & Low-Skill Roles

  • Ban on new overseas care worker visas (existing visa holders may extend until 2028)

“This system rewards contribution, not just presence,” stated Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. “We’re closing backdoor routes while ensuring businesses can access the talent they need to grow.”

Implementation Timeline

  • June 2025: Revised salary thresholds take effect

Germany is a top destination for skilled workers from around the world. A Robust economy, high quality of life, and the new Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card) system make it a go-to country for skilled immigrants who meet the eligibility requirements.

The opportunity card — a point-based immigration policy targets talents from non-EU countries including Pakistan, to address the labor shortages in the country’s critical sectors.

While the Chancekarte is lucrative, a few questions remain about bringing your family to Germany.

Laws and Regulations

Germany’s immigration laws are in the Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz).

It outlines the rights and requirements for foreigners living in the country. The chancenkarte falls under sections 20a and 20b of this act, focusing keenly on the skilled workers.

In general, the same standard rules for family (re-)union apply as for other residence permits. The main provisions of the family reunion these rules include:

  • Financial security: You are required to prove that you can support your family financially — stable income and sufficient savings — without depending on the public funds. ​​To achieve this, you will need a blocked account to show the authorities that you have enough money in your account in Germany to sustain yourself and your family during your stay.
  • Adequate House: Your house MUST be big enough to accommodate the family member(s) coming.
  • Health Insurance: It’s mandatory to have comprehensive insurance coverage for every family member. The Health Insurance Compulsory Law (Krankenversicherungspflichtgesetz) introduced in 2009 made it mandatory for all residents in Germany to have health insurance coverage.
  • Language: This will largely depend on the situation at hand. You will require a basic German language proficiency, especially for spouses. There are some exceptions for highly skilled workers. These basic skills also need to be proven with a test.

Family Scenarios

Different family scenarios require specific considerations and processes. Check the most common situations and the corresponding paths for the family reunion.

1. One parent with the Chancenkarte

  • The spouse must show basic German language proficiency (A1 level). There are some exceptions, especially for the highly skilled workers.
  • Children below 16 years old can join the parent without proof of language skills.
  • Children aged 16-18 years must demonstrate German language proficiency (B1 level) or at least integration potential.

2. Single Parent with Chancekarte (single custodian case)

Just like the one-parent case, children under 16 years old can join the parent without having to prove their language skills. Those aged between 16-18 must demonstrate skills.

3. Both Parents coming with Chancenkarte

Here, the accompanying spouse doesn’t require a separate application but must still meet the language requirements, if need be.

However, children will still follow the same rules as described under a single-parent scenario

4. Single Parent sharing Custody

You will be required to show proof of custody rights and the other parent’s consent to the child’s relocation. The parent must also show proof of financial means to support the child and himself or herself to the embassy or consulate.

These documents may vary depending on the case at hand.

What is the Application Process for the family Reunification Visa?

Bringing your family to Germany involves a detailed application process. Each step leads to the other.

Here is a standard guideline process that will help you navigate through the application process.

1. Preparation

  • Collect all necessary documents including valid passports, marriage and birth certificates, proof of financial stability–income statements, and bank statements, proof of adequate housing–rental agreement, and health insurance cover. Official documents such as marriage certificates generally need to be translated and apostilled.
  • Language certificate: If needed, ensure that the spouse and children aged 16-18 have German language certificates.

2. Application Submission

The primary cardholder can apply for family reunification at the local Foreigners office (Ausländerbehörde) in Germany. If you haven’t moved to Germany just yet, you can apply at the local German consulates or embassies.

The family member(s) must equally apply for the family reunification visa at the German consulate or embassy in their home country. This includes submitting all the gathered documentation and attending an interview.

Remember to check with your embassy early in advance to book an appointment. It may take over three months to get an appointment in some consulates or German embassies abroad.

3. Processing

The visa processing time may take a few weeks or even months. It varies from each embassy. It is therefore advisable to book as early as possible to avoid inconveniences because of potential delays.

4. Approvals

This is usually the best part. Once the application is approved, family members will receive their visas and can travel to Germany.

Upon arrival, they must register with the local authorities and complete additional formalities such as obtaining residence permits.

It is important to note that the Chancenkarte holder must initiate the process by applying for family reunification, including proof of relationship, financial stability, housing, and health insurance to the foreign office in Germany.

Family members can apply for their visa at the German consulate in their home country, presenting the same documents.

The family members may be required to attend an interview at the consulate to verify the relationship and the provided documentation.

The local Foreigners’ Office in Germany reviews the application, and, if you meet all the conditions, the embassy/consulate will approve your family reunification.

Once approved, you will receive the visa to Germany.

After landing in Germany, ensure that you register with the local authority for your residence permits. Lack of a valid address will limit you from opening a bank account,buying a sim card or mobile phone to use.

A Schengen visa is a document issued by the relevant authority that permits its holder to travel to any country that is a signatory of the Schengen Agreement or within the Schengen Area.

The Schengen Area includes 26 member countries, 22 of which are EU members. Non-EU countries such as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein have also joined the Schengen Agreement, allowing free movement within the area.

A Schengen visa is presented as a sticker placed on the passport, and its design is uniform across all Schengen Area countries.

There are various types of Schengen visas, and their validity depends on the purpose of the travel.

Schengen Visa Requirements

  1. Valid travel document (passport): Your passport must be valid for three months beyond the visa expiry date and have at least two blank pages. Copies of the passport’s first page and any previous visas should be included.
  2. Completed and signed Schengen visa application form.
  3. Proof of visit purpose: This could be a reservation, proof of accommodation, or an invitation if visiting relatives or friends.
  4. Proof of sufficient financial means during your stay in the Schengen Area.
  5. Two passport-sized photos: These should be recent, in the correct format, and with a white background.
  6. Travel insurance policy: This must cover medical emergencies and hospital care with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, valid for all Schengen countries throughout your stay.

For underage applicants:

  • Birth certificate.
  • Both parents must sign the visa application form.
  • Certified copies of both parents’ passports.
  • Written consent from both parents for the child to travel alone.
  • Certified copy of the court decision if one parent has sole custody.

Additional documents may be required depending on the type of visa:

Transit visa:

  • Confirmed airline ticket to the destination country and a copy.
  • Copy of a valid visa for the destination country, if applicable.

Tourist visa:

  • Bank statement for the last 6 months.
  • Leave letter from your employer (if employed).
  • Detailed travel itinerary, hotel reservations, or a formal invitation from a resident of a Schengen country.
  • Proof of flight reservation.
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay.
  • Proof of civil status (e.g., birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, if applicable).

Business visa:

  • Cover letter explaining the visit’s purpose.
  • Original certified copy of the Memorandum and Article of Association/Trade License/Proprietorship documents.
  • Current bank statements.
  • Letter from employer detailing the travel purpose and itinerary.
  • Invitation letter from the partner company in the Schengen area, faxed to the corresponding diplomatic mission.
  • Statement regarding travel expenses coverage.
  • Airplane ticket reservations.
  • Proof of accommodation for the entire stay.

Traveling for training purposes:

  • Certificate of enrollment at an eligible institution.

Other short-term travel purposes:

  • Invitation letter.
  • Entry ticket for an event.
  • Document proving the travel purpose if enrolling in a program.

Traveling for studies:

  • Two application forms.
  • Acceptance letter from a Schengen country university/college/school.
  • Proof of financial means.

Traveling for employment:

  • Two application forms.
  • Employment contract.

Traveling to visit relatives/friends:

  • Proof of financial status. If expenses are covered by the relative/friend, a formal document issued by the competent authorities to a resident of a Schengen country.
  • Formal invitation from the relative/friend.
  • If the applicant covers the expenses, the relative/friend’s name, address, and passport copy.
  • If the relative/friend is not a citizen of the Schengen country, a copy of their residency permit is required.

Traveling for family reunification with a Schengen spouse:

  • Two application forms.
  • Original and certified copy of the international marital certificate.

Pakistan Nationals and other foreign nationals often come to Canada for leisure, to visit family and friends, or to conduct business.

To visit Canada, applicants  must obtain a Visitor Visa. However, there are many reasons that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may refuse an applicant’s visitor visa application. British Columbia and Manitoba are two provinces in Canada that participate in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which allows them to nominate individuals for immigration to Canada based on their specific economic and demographic needs.

British Columbia and Manitoba have both issued invitations to apply (ITAs) to immigration candidates through their respective Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).

Candidates were invited through streams for skilled workers who had skills in key employment areas, an offer of employment in the province, or had previously studied in the province that nominated them.

Immigration results May 3rd—10th

British Columbia (B.C.)

B.C. invited at least 77 candidates through the Skilled Worker, and International Graduate (includes Express Entry British Columbia (EEBC) option)) streams of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BCPNP).

Candidates were invited for individuals who had eligible professional experience in sectors with in-demand positions that the BCPNP targets (specifically healthcare, childcare, construction, tech, and veterinary care). Minimum scores varied for each draw, with the following cut-offs:

  • Childcare draw cut-off score: 90;
  • Construction draws cut-off score: 93;
  • Healthcare draw cut-off score: 100;
  • Tech draw cut-off score: 120; and
  • Veterinary care draw cut-off score: 80.

Manitoba

Manitoba invited 371 candidates this week, through the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP). Candidates were invited across three different streams and an occupation-specific draw.

The first draw was an occupation-specific selection that targeted profiles declaring current employment in occupations that have a high labour need in the province. 18 ITAs were issued to candidates who had experience in professions corresponding to National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes*:

  • 72024 – Supervisors, motor transport and other ground transit operators; and
  • 73301 – Bus drivers, subway operators and other transit operators.

If you are a semi skilled individual who can communicate and understand English, then the Govt. of Canada has introduced a Occupation Trade that best suit you.

The eligible applicants will have to apply for the program and choose their relevant trade. Once you are invited by the province in Canada, you will appear for an exam. This exam allows you to be accredited by the Canada Province and ensures your skills are upto the mark and accepted across the Country.

What is a Red Seal Program?

The Canada Red Seal Program, formally known as the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program, is a national initiative aimed at establishing consistent standards to assess the skills of tradespeople across Canada. This program is a collaboration between the federal government and provinces/territories, with the goal of ensuring that tradespeople meet a common national standard of excellence.

Under the Red Seal Program, tradespersons who successfully pass the Red Seal examination receive a Red Seal endorsement on their provincial or territorial trade certificate. This endorsement signifies that they have demonstrated the knowledge required for the national standard in their trade. The Red Seal endorsement is recognized nationwide, promoting excellence to employers and facilitating labor mobility for skilled workers across the country.
